Meet The Judges
Restaurants are the connective tissue of our communities, the places we look to for nourishment and emotional sustenance. That’s why I’m thrilled to have been able to help Sapphire Supports in recognizing these 20 deserving restaurants. They exhibited great empathy and generosity in putting their communities first during one of the most challenging times for their small businesses. Every single restaurant on this list shows us the best of what we can be.
As a chef, author, and community builder who has worked to create a healthy, just, and sustainable food system for the past two decades, I am thrilled to be a judge for the Sapphire Supports Restaurants contest. The pandemic has upended the restaurant industry, and many of our favorite food and beverage business no longer operate, leaving small business owners and their employees in an unenviable position. This contest will provide critical financial resources to nearly two dozen local restaurants across the United States so they can not only stay afloat but flourish during this challenging period.
Restaurants not only employ and feed us, but they can also inspire and educate. They serve an important function for society by providing a place for us to congregate and celebrate. It was a privilege to work with Infatuation and Chase to help decide which restaurants these grants were awarded to - They can all use support especially now as we regain our footing after the pandemic.
I’m completely impressed and inspired by the creative and ingenious ways these restaurants supported their communities during the height of the pandemic and afterward. During a particularly challenging moment for all of us, these business owners used their restaurants as a way to support and help many people in need. These restaurants aren’t just beloved for their food, but for modeling how humane and responsive hospitality can potentially be. It was a joy reading about how these restaurants helped people over the past year.
